Bear Hood is a Warrior who confronts us with a closely cropped frame and direct expression. Almost photographic in quality, her fluorescent face markings mark her out as from another place. If she reminds you of someone, that’s because she reminded Hewlett of someone. Whilst flicking through a magazine he was struck by a real-life girl who closely resembled Noodle, one of four creations the artist made for Gorillaz. Her hoody features the repeat pattern of Pazuzu, a demon that Hewlett first clocked in the film the Exorcist. Here is an uncanny mix of youth and honesty, strength and maturity.

Boasting an F emblem on her chest, this character’s name is Filament Rouge. Inspired by a 1960s French comic book called Fantômette, this warrior is part of an unrealised project which portrayed a group of French misfit superheroes. When quizzed Hewlett couldn’t remember what, if any, powers they had. As is typical, the artist was drawn to the underbelly of society and imagined a world where people taken from the margins of society – or as he puts it, the gutter – rise up. This particular ‘warrior’ possesses a different visual language to the rest in this collection, she emerges from nothingness, a blurry apparition from the shadows. Between two worlds her striking red hair and cape slowly emerge.Details

This modern-day protestor was originally conceived as a gift to Extinction Rebellion in 2019 and projected onto the British Parliament buildings. Hewlett wanted to direct attention to what it takes to be a protestor right now, coming up against aggression and tear gas. Created pre covid, her face mask eerily prefigures life in the street during the pandemic. Her cracked goggles link her to Tank Girl and the need for self protection to endure life’s battles.Details

After visiting India for an extended stay in 2017, Hewlett returned fascinated by the intense proliferation of imagery of Hindu Gods everywhere. From market stalls to tiny street corner shrines to epic temples, these Gods offer great life lessons and seem to have a constant presence in every facet of life. Hewlett began to respond to the Gods, who he thought were probably the coolest looking deities anywhere, and Kali was the first in an as-yet unrealised ambition to depict them all.

This is the earliest image amongst the Warriors, with the original drawing dating from 1996. In a pre-digital age it was created on paper, sent to the printers but never came back, so in 2023 Hewlett remade the artwork. Tank Girl was the artist’s breakthrough moment and ignited the imagination of a whole generation by presenting the first exciting woman-led comic. Tank Girl is anarchic, out of control and happy to meet our gaze head-on, even as she sits on the toilet.
